The patch is embroidered Italy worn by Italian POWs on their prisoner of war issue field jackets. This patch is the larger jacket patch. POWs wore American uniforms when on work details and the uniforms had to be marked to distinguish them as prisoners. Also, the Italy Patch segregated the Italians from the "real enemies", Germans and Japanese. The patch appears to have been worn and removed. It is in fair to good condition and is at least 77 years old, probably older.
