I would guess that the original owner/builder used the empty box to store all of that other mix of "stuff. Again, I want to emphasize that none of the parts, plastic, masting, sails, hobbled up hull have anything to do with the original Not Sure how complete the ship is. Looks like a few pieces are missing or have fallen off the ship. Some of the sails have some small stains on them and have few small tears.
