After University he studied law and passed his finals, only to come to the realisation that his destiny was to be an artist. On the advice of George Clausen, a family friend, he enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art studying under Professor Brown. In 1897 he married and moved to Bury in Sussex where the Manor House they rented became a haven for artists painting the Sussex countryside, amongst them Edward Stott, Clausen, Mark Fisher and Arthur Vokes. The family moved to Hampstead in 1908. Wethered became a member of the NEAC and there formed a strong and lasting friendship with Wilson Steer and Ethel Walker. For a decade from 1910 Wethered was prevented from painting due to ill health. He applied his artistic talents to collecting and became a founder member of the Oriental Ceramic Club. His collection of drawings contained many examples at the great romantic landscapists such as Claude, Gainsborough and Turner. He had solo exhibitions at the Grosvenor Gallery, Redfern Gallery and showed in mixed exhibitions at the Baillie Gallery, Goupil Gallery, London Salon, New Gallery and the New English Art Club who elected him a member in 1932. A Memorial Exhibition was held at the Walker's Gallery, New Bond Street in 1965 and a sale of the remaining effects of Wethetred's studio was held at Christie’s South Kensington in 1982. Examples of his work are in the collection of Worthing Museum and Art Gallery. He was the father of artist Maud Wethered. Sulis Fine Art traces its origins back four generations. Benjamin Diamond opened a picture framing factory in Midtown Manhattan in the early 20th century. Originally known as Royal Art, the business worked closely with artists and museum institutions, developing a reputation for creating fine frames. Royal Art passed through the family and eventually evolved into Sulis, now run by Benjamin's grandson Bill, and his son Dan. Based in the South West of England, we source art from across the British Isles and ship worldwide. We handpick all our stock and we've grown into a ten-strong team of art historians, photographers, restorers, studio technicians and despatchers. We relocated to our Corsham studio in early 2020, leaving behind our small garden workshops in Bradford-on-Avon that had been our base for several successful years. Now located on the edge of the Cotswolds, our current home allows the team to work alongside our large catalogue of artworks, allowing us to provide you with fast global shipping and top-notch customer service. We are always striving to connect people with the art they love. Each week we add new artworks to our extensive catalogue, across all styles, subjects, colours and periods. At the heart of Sulis, we rescue and restore lost and forgotten works, giving you the opportunity to find unique pieces and discover art in a new and different way. View All Artworks View More -->
