Description: A rare 1st edition copy of Up the Niger by Captain A. F. Mocker-Ferryman. In 1889 Major Claude Macdonald was sent to investigate complaints about the Royal Niger Company in West Africa. This is an account of the expedition and the people, flora and fauna he encountered along the Niger and Benue Rivers. There is a front picture of the Major which is signed and feels raised, but I am not sure if this is an original signature or a copy of the signature. The butterflies on the front page are a species named after Ferryman, "Pentila Ferrymani" With a Chapter on Native Musical Instruments by Captain C. R. Day. One Folding map, 13 plates, appendix.
