Fukushima "Akabeko" Akabeko is a folk craft that was started by Gamo Ujisato, the lord of Aizu, about 400 years ago. The name comes from the red cow that drove away the epidemic that spread during the Heian period, and the red color is thought to ward off disease. The black dots on the Akabeko represent "hoso" (smallpox), and it is said that they were painted on the Akabeko as a substitute to protect young children from smallpox, which was once a deadly disease. It was a custom of low-ranking Aizu samurai to give Akabekos that shake their heads in hopes that children would grow up strong and healthy.
