In 2012, this charming, funny family Christmas film won the National Film Preservation Board's approval for it be included in the National Film Registry. Brief synopsis, via IMDb: In the 1940s, a young boy named Ralphie Parker attempts to convince his parents, teacher, and Santa Claus that a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun really is the perfect Christmas gift. Summary from the DVD case's back cover: The Christmas spirit isn't served up with more heartfelt warmth or observant hilarity than in this beloved adaptation of Jean Shepherd's holiday story. In 1940s Indiana, nine-year-old Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) dreams of his ideal Christmas gift: a genuine Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action Air Rifle. But when gruff dad (Darren McGavin) and doting mom (Melinda Dillon) regularly respond with "You'll shoot your eye out!" Ralphie mounts a full-scale, hint-dropping, Santa-begging campaign. He also endures all kinds of childhood calamities from snowsuit paralysis to the yellow-eyed Scotty Farkus affair to the dreaded tongue-on-a-frozen-flagpole gambit. We triple-dog-dare you to unwrap a more welcome Yuletide classic! Some film background and trivia, via IMDb: The film's setting is a town in Indiana, but was actually filmed in Cleveland, Ohio. To find an American city resembling an Indiana town of the 1940s, director Bob Clark sent his location scouts to 20 cities before selecting Cleveland. Parts of the movie, including the Christmas tree shopping scene, were filmed in Toronto, Ontario. One of Toronto's trademark red trolleys can be seen driving by the shot of the outside of the tree lot. Two more trolleys pass by in the background whilst inside the lot. Ralph's school exteriors were filmed at Victoria School in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Ralphie's father is never named. He is only referred to and credited as "The Old Man". Jean Shepherd's book "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash", on which the film is partly based, is a collection of short stories which Shepherd wrote for "Playboy" magazine during the 1960s, including the ones about the tongue sticking to the flagpole and eating Christmas dinner at a Chinese restaurant. The subplot of the mangy dogs constantly harassing The Old Man was taken from another of Shepherd's short story collections, "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories and Other Disasters." In that book, the character of Ralph is about 17 years old. Included among the American Film Institute's 2000 list of the 500 movies nominated for the Top 100 Funniest American Movies; also included among the "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", edited by Steven Schneider. The fact that the original story was supposed to be somewhat autobiographical further complicates debates about when the film is set. Most agree the film is supposed to be set sometime between 1939 (Wizard of Oz reference) and the early 1940s (music and cars). However, Jean Shepherd was actually born in 1921, so would have been nine years old in 1930. Darren McGavin ad-libbed the profane rants while fighting with the furnace. He said he speaks gibberish the entire time because it was almost impossible for him to ad-lib angry words without actual profanity. He did this in order to ensure a PG rating. According to Peter Billingsley, not many major studios were interested in a story about a little boy in the 1940s who wanted a BB gun for Christmas. Billingsley said the studio agreed to make this film if Bob Clark agreed to make a horror film. For the scene in which Flick's tongue sticks to the flagpole, a hidden suction tube was used to safely create the illusion that his tongue had frozen to the metal. Due to this film's popularity, the Daisy Rifle Company has started producing Red Ryder BB Guns for sale during the Christmas season. It has become one of Daisy's best-selling rifles. Two additional fantasy sequences of Ralphie's were ultimately cut from the film due to MGM wanting the film to be roughly 90 minutes in order to play every two hours in theaters. The first sequence involved Miss Shields visiting his mother to talk about his excellence and why he deserves the Red Ryder BB gun, followed by Ralphie imagining saving Flash Gordon from Ming the Merciless using the gun. The second sequence involved Ralphie saving Santa Claus from Black Bart and his gang with the gun, resulting in Santa piling presents on top of Ralphie as a reward. Both of these sequences have yet to be released; however, costumes and photos of the Flash Gordon scene can be found at the A Christmas Story House Museum in Cleveland Ohio, along with the script containing both scenes. The music used in the Flash Gordon sequence also still exists on the movie's official soundtrack. According to director Bob Clark, Jack Nicholson was given the script and was very much interested in the role of Mr. Parker, "The Old Man". However, Clark didn't learn of this until later and the studio didn't want to pay Nicholson's fee, which would have doubled the budget. Regardless, Clark said that Darren McGavin was still the better choice and was born to play the role. The "Little Orphan Annie" radio decoder pin that Ralphie receives is the 1940 "Speedomatic" model, indicating that the movie takes place in December 1940. Different decoder badges were made each year from 1935 to 1940. By 1941, the decoders were made of paper. Contrary to common belief, this is not the first portrayal of the misadventures of Ralphie and the Parker Family. PBS aired made-for-TV movies written, hosted, and narrated by Jean Shepherd, which featured the Parker Family and pre-dated "A Christmas Story" (1983). These movies also featured many other familiar characters and story elements later seen in "A Christmas Story". In 1976 and again in 1978, PBS aired 'Phantom of the Open Hearth" as part of an anthology series called 'Visions'. In 1982, PBS aired "The Great American Fourth of July and Other Disasters" as part of an anthology series called "American Playhouse". The 1976 and 1982 movies both featured James Broderick as The Old Man, while the 1982 movie featured Matt Dillon as Ralphie. According to cast interviews, when Ralphie is wearing his pink bunny suit in disgust, The Old Man's line, "He looks like a deranged Easter Bunny," was ad-libbed by Darren McGavin. For the film's final scene in the Chinese restaurant, director Bob Clark wanted to get real reaction from actress Melinda Dillon. She was the only cast member who was purposely given the wrong script and had no idea that the roasted duck brought out by the waiters would still have its head attached. Dillon was surprised upon seeing it and was genuinely startled when the waiter chopped its head off. In 2012, a staged musical adaptation of this movie opened on Broadway. One of the co-producers was Peter Billingsley, who as a child played the lead role of Ralphie in the movie. As an adult, Billingsley transitioned into producing such movies as The Break-Up (2006), Four Christmases (2008), and Iron Man (2008). "A Christmas Story: The Musical!" was the first stage play or musical he produced. I happily combine multiple items for shipping.
