Description: Here is a very nice and rarely seen old political campaign token or medal made of copper, in quite pleasing condition overall, measuring app. 1 & 3/16" across, with a plain edge. This Civil War era election piece shows moderate, honest wear, with only some minor imperfections nothing overly distracting, as the pictures hopefully indicate, and I have not done anything to clean or alter its appearance. Four of the photos have been "enhanced" for clarity, and the medal is identified in the DeWitt reference as USG 1864-1, his earliest campaign item, the gentleman usually associated with his successful bid at the presidency in 1868. Judging by its appearance, I have little doubt this classic token either circulated as a coin or was kept as a "pocket piece" for many years, for sentimental reasons. The wear indicates heavy circulation, to my way of thinking. The obverse pictures the gentleman in uniform facing left, and around the portrait is "Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant U.S.A.", the date "1864" at the bottom, flanked by stars. The reverse features a large "U. S." in an oval frame, an eagle above and flags, ammunition and implements of war at the sides, with crossed olive branches at the bottom. Real Americana! $260.
