The bush operations and tramways directly associated with the Powelltown mill are described in detail, with special emphasis on the technologies used. Living conditions in Powelltown, a town whose sole reason for existence was to support the sawmill, are also recorded in detail. The authors have been collecting information for this book since 1958. In that time over 400 photographs have been collected and copied. Amongst all of these photographs, none have been found showing Gilderoy station, or the Barrier bridge. Should any readers know of the existence of such photographs we would be most interested to hear from them (write to LRRSA Powell-town Book, P.O. Box 21, Surrey Hills 3127). From the remaining Powelltown photographs in our collection, we intend to publish the best in a Powelltown pictorial book, which will not duplicate any of the material in this book. We must all be grateful for the exceptionally fine photographic work of a number of amateur photographers, who recorded the Powelltown operations in some detail. Of particular note are the works of Rev. Wm. C. W. Brenton (1917-19 period), Fred Rayment (1918-20) and John Buckland (1937-44). More of their photographs will appear in the Powelltown pictorial book. None of the authors saw the tramway or High Lead logging systems in operation. Their history has been pieced together from hundreds of sources, and whilst every attempt has been made to ensure accuracy and completeness, areas of doubt still remain. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who can add information. The history of the scores of independent sawmills in the Powelltown area, and their associated tramways, are only briefly covered in this book. The Society intends to publish a separate book detailing the history of these mills. Research for this book, undertaken by Mike McCarthy, is now almost complete. All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage. If this is a railroad item, this material is obsolete and no longer in use by the railroad.
