Description: James Duncan, born in Montréal, Quebec, obtained a PhD in 1992 for research on the Great Grey Owl. He and his wife Patricia, also a biologist, have banded over 2,500 owls as part of their research. In 1991 they started the world's longest ongoing citizen-science owl survey. James has authored numerous scientific articles, conference proceedings and books on owls, and has delivered hundreds of public talks and university lectures on the subject. He received the 2009 International Champion of Owls Award for these efforts to conserve owls. James is currently the Director of the Wildlife and Fisheries Branch of the Manitoba Department of Conservation and is active in local, national and international biodiversity conservation initiatives including species at risk. He and his wife live among the owls in Balmoral, Manitoba, Canada.
