MICKEY "BLACK MIKE" COCHRANE - DOCUMENT SIGNED 06/01/1950 - HFSID 276675 MICKEY COCHRANE The Hall of Fame catcher sells his name cheaply to a souvenir baseball company. Document signed: "Gordon S. Cochrane", 1p, 8x10. Double matted and framed to an overall size of 13x16. High Point, North Carolina, 1950 June 1. Cochrane grants The Autographed Ball Corporation the exclusive right to use his name and reproduced signature on souvenir baseballs to be sold to the general public. Cochrane is to receive one penny for each baseball sold. The agreement is to remain in full force so long as Cochrane is employed by any Major League baseball club. When Cochrane is no longer so employed, the company may elect to terminate the agreement or continue it, but payments to Cochrane shall then not exceed the sum of $25.00! Hall of Fame catcher Mickey Cochrane (1903-1962) starred for Philadelphia A's dynasty which won consecutive AL pennants 1929-1931, and World Series in the first two of these years. When A's owner Connie Mack was forced by the Depression to break up his team, the fiery Cochrane moved to the Detroit Tigers, becoming player/manager and helping the Tigers two pennants in 1934-1935 and another World Championship in 1935. His playing career was ended by a near-fatal beaning in 1937, but he remained in the game as manager, coach and scout. Cochrane's .320 lifetime batting average is the highest ever for a catcher. He was the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1928 and again in 1934. When compared with the value of player endorsements and autographs today, and even considering 1950 prices, Cochrane's 1 per ball compensation, and especially the $25 cap, seem miniscule. Cochrane had chronic money problems and was helped financially by Ty Cobb, who numbered Cochrane among his few friends. (Mickey was one of only three Major Leaguers to attend Cobb's 1961 funeral.)
