Born in the small town of Paderno Fasolare near Cremona in 1834, Ponchielli studied at the Milan Conservatory. His first opera I Promessi Sposi was not initially successful in 1856. But when a revived version was performed in Milan in 1872, it proved popular. Ponchielli then worked with Arrigo Boito on an adaptation of [Victor] Hugo's play Angelo which became La Gioconda. Since its premiere in 1876, this opera has held the stage and has always been a favorite of opera audiences and singers.
