Description: SIXTY SELECTED POEMS by JOSEPH PAYNE BRENNAN First edition hard cover Jacket & frontispiece illustrations by STEPHEN E. FABIANNEW ESTABLISHMENT PRESS (1985) Joseph Payne Brennan may perhaps best be known as a writer of horror fiction, particularly influenced by H. P. Lovecraft. He was also a major poet in this field. Some secrets about Sixty Selected Poems: The poetry of Joseph Payne Brennan has been published in many places, including the American Scholar, the Beloit Poetry Journal, the Georgia Review, etc etc... and (need I also add?), in Weirdbook. In this book, the poet selected 60 of his favorite pieces... not all specifically related to horror and fantasy, but to me there is a definite feeling in these lines of the outré. The book was published in both a hard cover and a trade paper edition; this is the HARD COVER first edition. Both are still available and in print. In those days I used Weirdbook Press for my early books, but the poet did not want me to use that name for what he considered mainstream poems (as mentioned above, I considered them very weird, myself). So he and I together chose the name New Establishment Press. Later on I changed again: to W. Paul Ganley: Publisher — not just because I wanted my own name on it, but because it would be better publicity if I used my own name... less confusing than all these separate ones — a suggestion for which I am indebted to Dave Kyle. Stephen Fabian did a very nice dust jacket for it and frontispiece... I would have used more artwork, but the poet did not feel that a serious poetry book should contain a lot of artwork.... I did talk him into the dust jacket and frontispiece, however. Original cover price: $15 — but I am offering these at a 20% discount. Why? Because I doubt if Joe Brennan wrote these for money, and I certainly did not publish them to make a profit either... This was a business, for me, in name only — it was really a hobby. I published them because I loved them and wanted to see them in print. And I don't want the rest of them languishing in my basement; I want them in the hands of people who will enjoy them, either as readers or as collectors, or both! Here are some comments by reviewers:A collection of 'mainstream' poetry but with overtones of dark fantasy... the book contains some excellent work and readers with an interest in poetry... should give it a try. Recommended. (FCM in LOCUS). ...a sharp collection of poetry by a man who August Derleth once remarked "is not adequately appreciated as a poet in America." ... I especially enjoyed Turtles and the evocative Grey Owl. Tight, potent and often pungent, Brennan's work has reminded me of a fact I'd half-forgotten: that I love good poetry. But it is more than merely good: it is important. B. Indick, IBID. Want more reviews? Look this up on Amazon-dot-com (buy a copy there if you want to; buy one somewhere, just so long as you buy one!!!) — they have a couple of long interesting reviews on their site. ... and here are a couple of comments on early poetry collections by Brennan: Joseph Payne Brennan's poetry has that universality which is the province of all great verse... Hard-bitten compression, a peculiar flair for exacting satisfying essences from the more fateful, stark and unyielding facets of existence. August Derleth. ... Brennan is that kind of poet who may well be read years from now when the considerably more publicized among his contemporaries have been relegated to a relatively unimportant niche in American literary history. The Capitol Times (Madison, Wis.) Some on line commentaries: And to anyone wondering, Brennan's poetry has little or nothing to do with his horror fiction. Closer to nothing, probably. If you aren't a fan of his fiction, don't let that deter you from seeking out his poetry. "The Scythe of Dreams" should be mandatory for college students to read as introduction to this form of poetry. His publisher was right: it should be in line for a national award. And having written works as powerful as “Substance,” Brennan should not be consigned to the dust bin of forgotten authors. After all, anyone who has thumbed through an anthology knows that only a well-loved poem or two is enough to keep a mediocre poet in print for decades or, perhaps, centuries. Still, no matter how boldly The New Establishment Press demanded a greater recognition for Brennan, his poetrys remains no less obscure today. Prefer the paper cover edition?
