So, when I rented this release for the very 1st time ( on VHS / VCR Style ! ) from my local video store ( way back in 1997 ! ), I remember grabbing it with mixed emotions - naturally, I was bounding with joy since a modern performance was actually publicly / professionally ( Pro-Shot ! ) released in all of it's Glory ! -- and I already knew from my analogs which I'd had for about 8 years ( at that point ) - that the Band absolutely Smoked !! these Alpine Shows - all three nights, period - no questions asked. Bullseye ! type Live G.D. deliveries ... And, I also knew that the 1st night ( 17th ) was the hottest overall night, and both the 18th & 19th were both very close an overall runners-up. Wow ( I said ), as this video is taken ( pro-spliced together ) from those two nights even ?!! This can't get better we thought, so out comes the $3.00 bucks for the VCR rental ! Then it just dawned on me, that the title of this video is kind of upsetting - kind of even offensive, actually ? I thought to myself - hey, the Band wasn't " Downhill " by any means after the '89 Summer Tour ( despite it's unique & consistent-awesomeness - and in '90 too, for that matter ). I mean seriously ... look at pretty much most of the entire 1990 Summer Tour !! ( gosh, but then we lost Brent - crushing-blow, No-doubt ). How about the 1991 Shows ( Summer at Charlotte - RFK & the Giants Shows ) many of us saw & all loved ( huh, but the band did have to sustain the hit & run in-and-out-of the band thing by Hornsby ?? ) Yeah, but the '92 Summer Tour cooked night after night, I mean I saw like 10 dates in the East !?!? ( yes, but as we know that one almost killed Jerry & swiftly cancelled the long-anticipated '92 Veneta Shows ). Yeah, but he sure looked in fine spirits at the Halloween '92 Oakland JGB Come-Back Show ! & What about the ' Triumphant-Return ' to Mighty Autzen Stadium in '93, and even in Freedom Hall in KY ??! What ? Some Deadheads say the '93 Cal Expo shows in May were the Final Stand of both Grace & Power ! for the Good Ol' Grateful Dead ?!?!? No way I say ... as Garcia played out of this Stratosphere ! all three nights straight ( 2/25,26,27 ) during the Oakland '94 run !!! Please tell me you caught J.G.B. at the Kaiser on 11/11/94 !!?! Wow, then the haunted 1995 East Coast Summer Tour with gate-crashing & people badly injured ( a roof-collapse ? ) ?? But, but I did get to see the last " Great " Show by the Band, didn't I ? That Rex Foundation night ( 5/25 ) in Seattle ?? I mean there was a lot of dust & dirt in Portland, but hey - they had their ' on ' moments - right ? Then poof - on we go to a different era, and a hard / sad adjustment period for many of us. Were our heroes actually " Downhill From Here " after this Alpine run & this Glorious ! 1989 Summer Tour ? Well, not to me - still to this day. But when the arguments start coming-on, sometimes it is just easiest to change the subject. Last year, I read an interview where Bob Weir told John K. from Furthur that he felt the Grateful Dead were in their " Prime " in 1989-90. And, actually to quote Weir directly - he said they were " Really Hot " ! Yeah ! get'em Bobby !! As there is no-denying that you are Right-On !!! And then some - seriously ... Well, there were indeed a lot of primes & forms for this Amazing Band - but I guess my ear kind of agrees with Ace ! So, " Downhill From Here " or not -- this '89 Alpine DVD captures one of the best bands ever, and The ! best live-band ever during at least one of their many-many prime periods, and arguably their very-finest ... a complete Must-Have here ! Dang, I mean " Holy Grateful Dead " !!! Just as stated on the inside liner notes sheet on this DVD -- this was " one hot night " ( musically and meteorologically speaking ) at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium ! And believe me, I know because I was there - and this was a HOT ! one. Those of you who have ever had the pleasure - know that East Coast Summers can be rough & relentless from a humidity standpoint, and this was one of those dog days of summer. Even though the outlook looked sweaty, this soon became one of the favorite days of my life!, as the band was on Absolute-Fire ! song after song, pushing almost every single chance they saw a musical pocket to expose or explore. Jerry Garcia is completely " On ! " all-throughout this show. It is a flawless, seamless performance throughout. A Truly-Amazing ! Grateful Dead Show !!! On paper, the set list might look somewhat standard ( depending on your G.D. song / material tastes, obviously ... ), but the energy & enthusiasm by the Band leads to neat happenings all-throughout. From the second they hit the stage sporting some seriously fine late 80's eye-wear ( Ray-bans - Vaurnet Cats?, etc. ) this ' View ' might start with a little chuckle during Touch of Grey > Greatest Story, but soon enough there's far less laughing & more jaw-dropping. Documented video footage ( in entirety ) of America's Absolute Best-Live & Improvisational Rock n' Roll Band ! - period. Two quick things to note : I believe this DVD is the very 1st release ever of a complete " Stadium Show " for the Grateful Dead ? The camera-work is beyond standard Pro-Shot for rock concerts, it is exceptional ! As you'll figure out quickly - this footage is digitally remastered from the original video-feeds at the Show ! And last, but most-certainly... not least -- Garcia weaves a split second 'cluster/blend' of fretboard-work notes during Black Peter that remains to this day, one of my all-time favorite guitar fret board moves I've ever seen him make ! And believe me, I've seen some Garcia ! The 2nd Set is a just flat-out Heater !, so you had just better just go & grab your bandana ! Do you still have it ? I sure hope so, because you'll need it !! What a Show ... Three Rivers Stadium in '90. Amazing !!!
