Description: Franciscan Apple Apple Shaped Marmalade / Jelly Jar COMPANY / MAKER: Franciscan (Gladding McBean and Company) ITEM: Apple Shaped Marmalade / Jelly Jar PATTERN: Apple CIRCA: 1979 - 1984 CATEGORY: Pottery and China BACKSTAMP: The backstamp on this piece was used from 1979 - 1984 MEASUREMENT: 4 1/4" H. - 4 1/8" W. CONDITION: This lovely apple shaped Franciscan Apple Marmalade was made near the end of Franciscan's U.S.A production period. Pieces made during this time period still maintained the quality and beautiful hand-painting that Franciscan was famous for. After 1984 some pieces of the Apple pattern continued to be produced in England, but the quality of the hand painting was greatly reduced. The pieces that were produced late in the U.S. production span, were not made for long and many of them are hard to find. Our hard to find Apple marmalade is in Undamaged Condition without chips, cracks, or mold imperfections. There is no crazing. The inside is nice and clean and without wear. The color is fantastic. The hand painted apples were beautifully applied. This marmalade is exactly what you would expect of Franciscan China made in the USA. between 1940 and 1984. Apple - (Made in U.S.A -1940s -1984) This pretty hand painted pattern was produced by the Gladding McBean Company. This pretty pattern is one of the most extensive patterns produced by this company. There are about 100 pieces to be found in the older American made Apple pattern. Most of these pieces are marked with a USA backstamp or one of the Franciscan USA backstamps, but a few of them just have a number on the bases or backs. Many of the Apple pieces which were produced in England have the same shapes as the older pieces, but the quality of the hand painting is not as good. Most collectors can tell at a glance if they are looking at a new or old piece. If it is difficult for you to tell, most pieces are stamped "Made in England." Apple is still being made today. Many of the shapes are new designs, and cannot be confused with the older pieces.. These pieces are currently being made in Portugal. With the move to Portugal the quality has gone even farther downhill, so these latest pieces cause little confusion in the collector market.
