Forrest didn't say tthat the way to win battles was to "get there fustest with the mostest men." He would have been totally in capable of so obvious a piece of literary carpentry. He did say, simple and directly, that the way to win was to get there - the right place - first - at the right time - with the most men - the decisive striking power. His military life started at the age of forty, when he enlisted as a private in the cavalry of the Confederate States Army. Before that he had, from "poorest poverty," made a fortunate trading in lands, live-stock and slaves. He had no military education and little formal education of any sort. But he had courage and character and an immense common sense - and so, less than four years later, it was Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest, C.S.A., who surrendered the last Confederate force in arms east of the Mississippi River. And it was the same Forrest, undoubtedly, who was called to head the mysterious Invisible Empire of the original Ku Klux Klan. This Forrest was a fighter of the sort about whom legend gathers. He was not only a bold but prudent commander, but a trooper in hand-to-hand combat as well - three times wounded, horses shot under him twenty-nine times, as he fought with pistol, saber and brains. The tactics of the war in which he fought are as outmoded today as are its weapons. It was a local, not a global war. It was fought in two dimensions, instead of three. But it was fought by men, and men and the leading of men are the unchanging elements in warfare. "As long as we followed Forrest," said one of his veteran troopers long afterward, "we were heroes, even to the infantry." There could be no higher testimonial of what Forrest did with men. The life of Forrest has been written before, more than once. This is an effort to bring together into one connected narrative the available information about him, from all sources, official and personal, fleeting and ephemeral as well as permanent. The attempt is to present him not as a comet flashing across the sky, but in his place in the whole picture of the War Between the States - and his place as well in the history of warfare. For, outmoded as are the weapons with which he fought, modern leaders are turning more and more to his unlettered soldier who, out of the deeps of his own fighting experiences, compacted more of how to win wars into fewer words than has any other man - "Get there first with the most."
