Description: Engraving The siege of the island of Ré, in 1627Jacques Callot (1592-1635)Jacques Callot created this famous engraving in 1630 and it was printed to be later trimmed and assembled.I do not know when this was printed, it was definitely made from an original engraved copperplate. The panels have a yellow tone from age along with some areas that look to have slight water damage. These are all shown in the photos (6) Panels 24" v x 19" h (panels vary slightly)Approximate print size 45.5" v x 54" h In the Edict of Nantes, the French Huguenots were promised freedom to express their faith in and around a number of cities. La Rochelle acquired the fame of being the unofficial capital of France's Huguenots; the port city was the base for many French overseas expeditions. It is also referred to as a 'Maritime Republic'. In 1627, the city of La Rochelle concluded a treaty with England which foresaw the landing of English troops in France. The French troops laid siege to La Rochelle; English attempts to break the siege failed. After 14 months of siege (August 1627 to October 1628) the city, whose population had dropped from 18,000 to 5,000, the city surrendered. Jacques Callot was born in 1592 in Nancy into a Lorraine family recently ennobled by Charles III of Lorraine. After an apprenticeship with a goldsmith-engraver in Lorraine, he went to Rome to study engraving with Philippe Thomassin. Approved by Cosimo II de Medici, he joined the workshop of Giulio Parigi in Florence. Thanks to Antonio Tempesta, he explored etching. Installed at the Offices in 1614, he engraved major works. An innovator, he introduced the “hard varnish” of Florentine luthiers, revolutionizing the art of etching. After the death of Cosimo II de Medici, he returned to Lorraine. He is considered one of the masters of etching. “He brought [it] to the last degree of perfection [in] his Great Sieges and his Miseries of War, which will always cause the despair of all engravers, and the admiration of true connoisseurs... masterpieces due to cutting edge magic of the artist”(Meaume, Research on the life and works of Jacques Callot, vol. 1, pp. 70-71) I found there is a company in France that has been printing since 1797. The Chalcographie du Louvre has conserved and printed from a collection of several thousand engraved copperplates, with the prints destined for sale
