Description: Dorsey Potter Tyson (Maryland/NY 1891-1969)Odyssey, 1930sSigned lower rightWatercolor and ink on paper 9 by 10 1/4 inches (image) 16 by 17 inches (mount) Ex: Newman Galleries with label on back on original mount and inventory number 22424. A delightful scene with a leaping fox, ibex, butterfly and dragonfly, a person walking a cheetah on a leash and a man riding a stallion, with leafy branches and pine cones! Art Deco delight! From AskArt, Dorsey Potter Tyson was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1891, and died there in 1969. He did color prints from a wide range of oriental sources in the Art Deco style, similar to Elyse Ashe Lord. His color prints appear to be colored etchings, which have been extensively colored by hand, but he used a technique which effectively combines the printing of a normal etching simultaneously with that of printing a monotype. The lines of the etched design, which compose the basic image inked with black ink, and then the surface of the plates cleaned in the manner used for printing a normal monochrome etching. Thick colored printers ink is then painted onto the surface of the plate using a brush as though painting a plate for a monotone print. The proof is then printed at one pull through the press, a very time consuming method of color printmaking.
