Clark Ashton Smith was born in 1893 in Long Valley, California. He died in 1961 in Pacific Grove, California. His formal education was limited due to his suffering from psychological disorders including a fear of crowds. He was, however, an insatiable reader, and continued to teach himself after he left school. His reading included ROBINSON CRUSOE, GULLIVER’S TRAVELS, HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON, THE ARABIAN NIGHTS, EDGAR ALLAN POE, and many others. At the age of 13 he also read an unabridged dictionary word for word, studying not only the definitions of the words but also their derivations from ancient languages. Having an extraordinary eidetic memory, he seems to have retained most or all of it. He also taught himself French and Spanish. At age 17, he sold several tales to The Black Cat, a magazine which specialized in unusual tales. Writing poetry also motivated the young Smith. He became a protege of the great San Francisco poet, George Sterling. A bit later Smith came into contact with literary figures who would later form part of H.P. Lovecraft’s circle of correspondents. These men included Samuel Loveman, George Kirk, and Donald Wandrei. In 1920 Smith received a letter from H.P. Lovecraft which began a 15-year friendship which included much correspondence. Between 1929 and 1934 Smith wrote more than 100 short stories, most of which were weird horror or science fiction. Most of Smith’s fiction falls into one of the four worlds that he created: Hyperborea, Poseidonis, Averoigne, and Zothique. Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard also became correspondents between1933 and 1936. Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, and H.P. Lovecraft became the three members of the great triumvirate of authors published in Weird Tales magazine. In 1942, August Derleth, the co-founder of Arkham House, published Smith’s OUT OF SPACE AND TIME. Derleth (with Arkham House) and later, Arkham House, would go on to publish 13 volumes of Smith’s fiction and poetry. Beyond his writing, Smith also became an expert in sculpture, beginning in 1936 and continuing throughout the rest of his life. In fact, some of Smith’s sculptures were featured via photographs on the dust jackets for some of his books. Clark Ashton Smith was (and remains) a giant of science fiction, fantasy fiction, and horror fiction as well as being one of the most important Arkham House authors in history. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A NEAR FINE book in an outwardly VERY GOOD+ to NEAR FINE dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its traditional Arkham House Holliston Black Novelex binding with gilt lettering on the spine of the book. The gilt lettering on the spine of the book is slightly dulled, but remains completely and easily readable. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $3.00. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. The dust jacket has undergone some relatively minor restoration that has been accomplished by a professional paper conservationist using archival, non-acidic materials. The restoration is mainly at the edges head and heel of the spine panel of the dust jacket. The spine panel of the dust jacket also shows some browning, but less than is usually encountered. The front and rear panels of the dust jacket are bright and attractive; they appear to be in ABOUT FINE condition. This soft paper dust jacket is quite prone to soiling, tearing, and general wear; this example of this dust jacket is much better than is usually encountered. The dust jacket artwork is by the West Coast artist Frank Wakefield.
