His work follows the tradition of earlier painters like Frederic Remington, capturing the idealized viewpoint of the “Old West” or the frontier of American history. Born in 1929 in New York City to Italian immigrants, Perillo studied at Pratt Institute, the School of Visual Arts, and the Arts Student League after serving in the Navy. His fascination with the American West led him to meet the celebrated Western painter William Robinson Leigh while traveling in Arizona, subsequently becoming his pupil. Perillo often visited Native American reservations to study local culture and customs, and his paintings ranged from miniatures to murals.
