Description: c 1850 Davenport Green ‘RUINS’ Trio, Childs Cup, Saucer & Plate Pearlware Transferware Staffordshire Miniature Trio Reference: Doris Lechler, ‘English Toy China’, Figure No. 44, pp 20, 130. This is a child’s cup, saucer, and plate transfer printed in an earthy green with a pearlware glaze in the ‘RUINS’ pattern made by Davenport, Staffordshire, England, c 1850. This miniature trio was meant for use as part of a tea set made for a child. DAVENPORT, the maker, is in green on the bottom of the saucer and plate, along with the embossed anchor mark. On the Plate the ‘Ruins’ pattern depicts what is left of a cathedral with columns and arches appearing on the left side with a column on the right of the main scene with trees and a willow and underbrush; there is a dog with a man using a stick to guide two cows; in the far distance we see a grand estate. The Cup has the addition of the sailboat with 2 people in it, and in the bowl and on the Saucer is a man with a cane gazing into the distance beside another ruin with trees. The borders have floral designs with an egg and dart trim. Dimensions: Cup: 3.25” W x 2.75” D x 1.875” H There is a edge rim chip.Saucer: 4.5” D x 1” H There is an edge rim chip, and a foot rim chipPlate: 5” Diameter Please excuse the white glare reflections in the photos. This cup, saucer, and plate have been played with by a child and are in excellent condition with the exceptions noted above. Transfer skips and smudges, crazing, and minor typical firing imperfections sporadically appear consistent with production methods at the time of making. Presented as is and as found.
