Description: BRITISH ANTISLAVERY 1833-1870 by Howard Temperley Product Details Hardcover: 298 pagesPublisher: Longman; 1St Edition edition (1972)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0582501024ISBN-13: 978-0582501027The British Antislavery Movement was on e of the most important reform movements of history. Two of its early successes, the ending of British participation in the slave trade in 1807 and the freeing of the slaves in Britain's sugar colonies in 1833, have been widely celebrated. What is less generally recognised is that British abolitionists were far from satisfied with these achievements. To them slavery was an evil no matter where or under whose authority it occurred. This study deals with the way in which, during the years after 1833, British humanitarians tried to make the attack on slavery an international crusade. It describes Buxton's ill-fated attempt to establish model settlements in Africa, the struggle to make slavery illegal in India and to protect the rights of the negroes in the West Indies, the battle with the free-traders over the admission of slave-grown sugar into Britain and the efforts to assist abolitionists in France and the United States. Behind these developments lay a new and militant ideology formulated by the Young England Abolitionists during the struggles over West Indian slavery. This ideology, later taken over and elaborated by abolitionists in America, proved a mixed blessing. It gave the movement a resilience and persistence which it would otherwise have lacked, but it alienated many outsiders. Ideological differences also contributed to the factional disputes which plagued the movement in its later years. Condition - Unread NEW.
