Painted on paper and in original wooden frame (walnut or mahogany?) with brass inset. Detailed provenance written in old hand on back with family names and dates. Family resided in ‘Orchardside’, Beverly, New Jersey and also Pennsylvania. Rebecca Webb Allinson, the sitter, married into a prominent Quaker anti-slavery activist family in Pennsylvania. Good condition with slight bend to paper. Crease visible near top of painting. Slight foxing in white areas. Overall a nice 19th century American miniature portrait. Measures 4 1/2” wide and 5” high. On Dec-16-24 at 02:56:52 PST, seller added the following information: Below is information regarding the Allinson family from Pennsylvania which includes information about the person in the portrait and her husband. This helps to date this portrait from the mid 1800s. William James Allinson (1810-1874) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Quakers James Allinson and Bernice Chattin Allinson. He married Rebecca Webb Hinchman. He apprenticed, then became a druggist, in Burlington, New Jersey. William Allinson was the author of several works and was editor of the journal Friends' Review in 1867.
