Description: This is an antique Currier & Ives colored lithograph titled LITTLE SISTER. It is in what I am fairly certain is its original frame. The person who originally framed it wrote some notes on the reverse side of the wood backing, and surprisingly wrote the date, March 2, 1862 or possibly 1864. It was framed in Beavertown (probably Pennsylvania). The actual pricing is even there. I have taken a separate photo of it. It was pretty exciting to find this! The overall frame measures 17 1/2 inches high x 13 1/2 inches wide (44.4 cm x 34.3 cm). The print measures 14 inches high x 10 inches wide (35.5 cm x 25.4 cm). The frame molding width measures 2 inches (5.1 cm). The print is marked in the bottom left corner PUBLISHED BY CURRIER & IVES. At the bottom it reads LITTLE SISTER, with 587 below that. In the bottom right corner, 152 NASSAU ST. NEW YORK. I must say, this is one of the most confusing Currier and Ives lithographs I have come across. There are two things I cannot figure out. It looks like the print was attached to the glass, but instead of the typical hand coloring on the front, someone painted it on the back to bring out the colors. This must be some type of special technique, but I’m just not familiar with it. The other thing is that I was able to find this print with the exact girl and dog, but it is titled LITTLE SUSAN! I could not find this exact print with this title, LITTLE SISTER. LITTLE SISTERS is a completely different print, literally with two sisters. I’m sure a Currier and Ives collector knows what happened here, but I don’t. There are numerous scattered areas where it looks like air got in between the print and the glass. This is most notable in the upper left section, though it does appear throughout. It looks like there is discoloration on much of the print, but this must have something to do with age and possibly even glue? I just don’t know. The colors on the print though are just beautiful, as is the detail on it. The frame is made of pine. I don’t know if this is the original finish or it was refinished at some point. Now however, it is in fairly poor condition, with numerous scratches, dents, scuff marks and other general wear. The backing was attached with just a few nails when I purchased it, so I was able to take it apart and photograph everything separately. I reattached it with framing staples. It weighs a little over 2 lbs. 4 oz. (1.03 kg).
