ANGELA BOFILL AUTOGRAPH INSCRIBED FROM ALBUM COVER SOMETHING ABOUT YOU

Description: INSCRIBED AUTOGRAPH IN BLACK INK BY ANGEL BOFILL ON A PARTIAL ALBUM COVER FOR HER ALBUM SOMETHING ABOUT YOU. MEASURES APPROX 7 7/8 X 10 INCHES Angela Tomasa Bofill (born May 2, 1954) is an American singer-songwriter of Cuban-Puerto Rican origins. A New York native, Bofill began her professional career in the mid-1970s.[2] Bofill is most known for singles such as, "This Time I'll Be Sweeter", "Angel of the Night", and "I Try". Bofill's career spans over four decades. BiographyEarly life and educationBofill was born on May 2, 1954, in the Brooklyn area of New York City[3] to a Cuban father and a Puerto Rican mother.[4] Raised in The Bronx, Bofill grew up listening to Latin music and was also inspired by African-American performers. During Bofill's childhood, her weekends were taken up studying classical music and singing in New York City's All City Chorus, which featured the best singers from all of the high schools in the five boroughs.[5] For high school, Bofill attended Hunter College High School; graduating in 1972.[6] Bofill later studied at the Manhattan School of Music, receiving a Bachelor of Music degree in 1976.[7] CareerBofill began her professional career, singing during her teenage years. Bofill performed with Ricardo Marrero & the Group and Dance Theater of Harlem chorus before being introduced to Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen of the jazz label GRP Records by Dave Valentin, her friend and jazz flutist.[8] Grusin and Rosen signed Bofill and produced her first album, Angie, in 1978. Angie was well received both critically and commercially and included the chart single "This Time I'll Be Sweeter" (co-written by Gwen Guthrie and Haras Fyre), and Bofill's sprawling jazz composition, "Under the Moon and Over the Sky". Less than a year later, a second album, Angel of the Night was released and outperformed its predecessor. The album included the chart singles "What I Wouldn't Do (For the Love of You)" and the up tempo title track, as well as the song "I Try", written by Bofill and covered by Will Downing in 1991. The reception of these albums positioned Bofill as one of the first Latina singers to find success in the R&B and jazz markets.[9] Bofill performed a sold-out concert at Avery Fisher Hall as part of the Newport Jazz Festival on June 20, 1980. Her musical director was Onaje Allen Gumbs, keyboards, Sammy Figueroa, percussion, a 9-piece band and guests including Steve Khan, guitar, Eddie Daniels, tenor sax and flute, and a 24-voice choir.[10] Clive Davis, the head of Arista Records, showed interest in Bofill. Arista had a distribution deal with GRP. Bofill switched labels for her next album, Something About You (1981). Produced by Narada Michael Walden, the album was an attempt to move Bofill into mainstream R&B and pop music. It didn't perform as well as previous releases, despite the singles "Holdin' Out for Love" and the title track, which both reached the R&B Top 40.[11] The following year, Bofill and Walden reunited for Too Tough. The title song reached No. 5 on the R&B chart and spent four weeks at No. 2 on the Dance chart. A follow-up single, "Tonight I Give In", reached the Top 20.[12] Several months later, Bofill released her final collaboration with Walden, Teaser. The album failed to match the success of Too Tough but did produce one Top 20 R&B hit, "I'm On Your Side", which has been covered by several artists, most notably Jennifer Holliday, who had a Top 10 hit with it in 1991.[12] Bofill recorded two more albums for Arista with the help of The System and George Duke before leaving the label in the mid-1980s. Following the birth of her daughter, she moved to Capitol Records and the producer Norman Connors for Intuition (1988), which produced her last significant chart success, a cover of Gino Vannelli's "I Just Wanna Stop", which reached No. 11 on the R&B chart. She recorded three more albums over the next eight years and provided backing vocals on albums for Diana Ross and Kirk Whalum and for Connors's Eternity (2000). She performed live (with a sizable audience internationally, particularly in Asia) and appeared in the stage plays God Don't Like Ugly and What a Man Wants, What a Man Needs. She also toured the US and Europe in multi-artist jazz shows.[11] Bofill returned to the stage, at the suggestion of Engel, for "The Angela Bofill Experience" after losing her ability to sing after her second stroke in 2007. In the show, Bofill recounted her life and career and was joined by Maysa Leak, Phil Perry, and Melba Moore, who performed her biggest hits and signature songs. In 2012, Bofill was profiled and interviewed for the TVOne documentary series, Unsung.[13][11] Personal lifeBofill was married to country music artist Rick Vincent from 1984 until 1994 and together they have a daughter, Shauna.[14] Health problemsBofill suffered a stroke on January 10, 2006, and was paralyzed on her left side. She convalesced at Sutter Hospital in Santa Rosa, California, and was released from intensive care on January 15, requiring speech and physical therapy. Bofill lacked health insurance, and a benefit concert was organized to pay her hospital bills. The show was planned by Rich Engel, her manager, and the New York radio stations Kiss FM and WFAN-FM,. It took place on March 11, 2006, at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey. Similar events followed, and other aid was sought from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. Her album Live from Manila (recorded in September 2004) was released during this time. Bofill suffered a second stroke in July 2007, which required therapy and left both her speech and mobility impaired.[15] DiscographyStudio albumsYearAlbumChart positionsRecord labelUS[12]USR&B[12]USJazz[12]1978Angie47205GRP/Arista1979Angel of the Night341021981Something About You61134Arista1983Too Tough406—Teaser8120211984Let Me Be the One—39—1985Tell Me Tomorrow—53—1988Intuition—38—Capitol1993I Wanna Love Somebody—51—Jive1996Love in Slow Motion———Shanachie"—" denotes the album failed to chartLive albumsYearAlbumChart positionsRecord labelUSUSR&B2006Live from Manila——Black Angel"—" denotes the album failed to chartCompilation albumsYearAlbumChart positionsRecord labelUSUSR&B1986The Best of Angela Bofill——Arista1991The Best of Angie: Next Time I'll Be Sweeter——1999The Definitive Collection——2003Platinum & Gold Collection——2004The Best of Angela Bofill——BMG2014The Essential Angela Bofill——RCA, Sony Legacy"—" denotes the album failed to chartSinglesYearSingleChart positionsAlbumUS[12]USR&B[12]USA/C[12]USDance[12]NL[16]1979"This Time I'll Be Sweeter"1042339——Angie"What I Wouldn't Do (For the Love of You)"—18———Angel of the Night1980"Angel of the Night"—67———1981"Something About You"—21———Something About You1982"Holdin' Out for Love"—26——32"Break It to Me Gently"—————1983"Too Tough"—5—2—Too Tough"Tonight I Give In"—12———"I'm on Your Side"—20———Teaser1984"Special Delivery"—65—34—"Can't Slow Down"—59—15—Let Me Be the One1985"Let Me Be the One"—84———"Who Knows You Better"—————"Tell Me Tomorrow"—72———Tell Me Tomorrow1986"I Don't Wanna Come Down (From Love)"—————"Still in Love"—————1988"I Just Wanna Stop"—11———Intuition1989"Love Is in Your Eyes"—————1992"Love Was Never" (with Marion Meadows & Gene Rice)—70———Keep It Right There1993"I Wanna Love Somebody"—————I Wanna Love Somebody"Heavenly Love"—————"—" denotes the single failed to chartAwardsAmerican Music Awards: 1984 – Best R&B/Soul Female Artist (nominated)Bay Area Music Awards (Bammies): 1984 Outstanding Black Contemporary Artist/Group Brooklyn native Angela Bofill sang with Ricardo Morrero & the Group and the Dance Theater of Harlem chorus before her 1978 debut. With her strong, distinctive alto, she has carved a niche as an outstanding interpreter of soul ballads. Between 1978 and 1984, Bofill had consistent success on the R&B charts, with six albums making the Top 40 (five of which made the Top 100 on the pop charts as well), including two, Angel of the Night (1979) and Too Tough (1983), that made the Top Ten. During this period, she also placed seven singles in the R&B Top 40, with "Too Tough" making the Top Ten. Bofill's career cooled off after 1984, but she returned to the R&B charts with Intuition (1988), I Wanna Love Somebody (1993), and Love in Slow Motion (1996). One result of the crossfertilization between white, black and Hispanic music students has been the emergence of a generation of musicians that doesn't think twice about crossing traditional barriers between pop, jazz and classical, or about mixing salsa, funk and rock. Angela Bofill, the 27-year-old Hispanic singer and composer who is appearing at the Savoy, 141 West 44th Street, tonight and tomorrow, is a true child of this cultural hothouse. The eldest daughter of a Cuban-French longshoreman and his Puerto Rican wife, Miss Bofill is a thoroughly trained singer and composer whose cabaret style suggests Bette Midler or Melissa Manchester colored by Latin inflections. While Miss Bofill's pre-Raphaelite good looks and theatrical stage presence make her a natural cabaret star, her original songs, such as ''Angel of the Night'' and ''Under the Moon and Over the Sky,'' boast elaborate pop-jazz melodies with classical overtones that are outside the realm of mainstream cabaret. And Miss Bofill's lyrics evoke a romantic, childlike fantasy world of bright colors and quicksilver emotions rather than a world of sophisticated romance. Angela Bofill was brought up in the West Bronx and in Harlem. Her father, before becoming a dock worker, had led his own Latin jazz band, and Miss Bofill grew up listening to the sounds of Tito Puente and Celia Cruz. When she could barely walk, she was already singing at family gatherings, and at 10, she had written a children's operetta from a story in a Girl Scout book. Lessons From the Outset ''There was no family opposition to my becoming a singer,'' Miss Bofill recall ed the other day. ''But my mother insisted that if I wanted to sin g professionally, I had to go to school and study for it.'' Miss Bo fill began piano and viola lessons at 10, and at Hunter College High School, she played second viola in the orchestra and sang in the c horus. ''I was about 16 when I started writing my own songs, inspired by Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick,'' Miss Bofill recalled. ''Later, other influences came into play, like Earth, Wind & Fire and Chick Corea.'' Miss Bofill joined the All-City Chorus, made up of the best voices from New York's high schools, when she was 17. Among the classical works she sang were Mendelssohn's ''Elijah'' and Stravinsky's ''Les Noces.'' But while she was learning the classical repertory, Miss Bofill also was exposed to jazz-fusion music. ''Hunter was an all-girls school then, and we had to import our guys from the High School of Music and Art,'' she says. ''Everyone used to hang out at the Boogie Woogie Studio on West 87th Street, which was owned by Cannonball Adderley's bass player. That's where I met Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Flora Purim, Airto and a lot of other jazz-fusion people.'' Touring the Local Latin Clubs During her last year of high school, Miss Bofill also began singing with The Group, a popular salsa band led by Ricardo Morrero that toured the ''cuchifrito'' circuit of local Latin clubs. She attended the Hartt College of Music at the University of Hartford, for a year before switching to the Manhattan School of Music, where she earned her degree in voice. ''Suddenly, I found myself in the real world,'' Miss Bofill remembered. ''For two years, I was with the Dance Theater of Harlem. All the time I was looking for work. But not having a manager, an agent or a record company, I had to rely on wor d of mouth. I sang backup on some records, but in two years of s cuffling, I only made about $3,000.'' It was through an old friend, the flutist Dave Valentin, that Miss Bofill got her break. Mr. Valentin had been the first act signed by GRP Records, the New York-based record company founded by the film composer and pop-jazz arranger-producer Dave Grusin with his engineer and business partner, Larry Rosen. Its purpose was to launch the careers of young black and third world jazz-fusion and funk artists. Mr. Valentin arranged for Miss Bofill to play her demonstration tapes for the GRP officials. They were impressed and signed Miss Bofill to a long-term recording contract, and her debut album, ''Angie,'' which featured lavish orchestrations by Mr. Grusin, became the label's first substantial commercial success. A second album, ''Angel of the Night,'' did equally well. But Miss Bofill's sudden success led to contractual disputes with GRP, which were settled when she moved over to Arista, GRP's parent label. A Shift to the Mainstream Editors’ Picks I Offered to Give My Home to My Son. Why Does He Expect Me to Leave It? Is This the Endgame for the Age of Heroes? 9 Predictions for How We’ll Eat in 2024Miss Bofill's newest album, ''Something About You,'' marks a shift away from the florid pop-jazz of the first two albums toward a mainstream pop-soul style. While the tunes and arrangements are more conventional than before, Miss Bofill's strikingly rich and emotional singing gives the album a special warmth. Like Stevie Wonder, with whom she is to collaborate on a song, Miss Bofill has a mystical view of the power of music to inspire and change people's lives. ''I'm proudest of my message songs like 'Children of the World United,' and 'Only Love' from the new album,'' Miss Bofill said. ''I feel very, very close to children. They are not uptight like most adults and it's about time the Aquarian Age really came about.''
