Description: Description This set is an elusive and important scholarly work on the Midrash in Hebrew. Also included are very important introductions to each section of the Chumash. This set goes up to Deuteronomy, the last volume, volume 7 ending at the end of Bamidbar (Numbers). The material found in this set is extremely valuable. As to not only the succinct and informative notations/translations at the bottom of each page (Which sheds a lot of light as to the intentions of the authors) but also as to its scholarship shown in those comments. Only an expert on the entire Midrash and Midrashic literature could have accomplished such insight. The introductions to each volume, giving the background, theory, compilation history, with citations and in-depth analysis is intellectually breathtaking. It is a pleasure to read, especially with the understanding that much hard work went into creating this work. Another feature of this set is the vowel pointing done by another expert in the field. The set was printed from 1954 until 1963 due to the colossal job entailed on the part of the authors. Condition: Nice and complete pages. No writing anywhere in the interior. Good binding. The set however has library stamps, a pocket at rear, and a dedication label on first blank pages. Elimelech Epstein HaLevi (1901 - 26 Beshevat 5733, February 9, 1983), was a teacher and researcher of the classical period, best known for his important translations of Greco-Roman historical literature, and comparing it to the Pharisaic literature of the time. Biography and research activityEpstein, who called himself "The Levite" after his lineage, was born in Radin and studied at the local yeshiva and later at the Vilnius yeshiva. He immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1926 and was among the graduates of the first class of the Institute of Jewish Studies at the Hebrew University. After about 30 years of teaching and education at the Levinsky Teachers' Seminar, Halevi returned to academia as a senior lecturer in the Department of Talmud at Tel Aviv University and in the Department of Hebrew Literature at the University of Haifa. Over the years, Halevi was chosen by the Bialik Institute to translate some of the masterpieces of Greco-Roman historiography: "History of the Peloponeasian War" (5779), "Anabasis" (5779) and "Life of Famous People" (5741-5733) ). In addition, Halevi translated Prof. Shaul Lieberman's important book, "Greek and Graeco Culture in the Land of Israel" (5773). In the years 1742-1772, Halevi worked on the publication of a series of books focusing on the extensive material he had accumulated in his research on the comparison between the world of Jewish law and legend and the Greek and Latin sources of the period. The first and best-known book in the series was "The World of Exegesis: Exegetical Literature in the Light of Greek Sources" (1952). Halevi died in 26 Beshevat 5733 (February 9, 1983), a few months after the publication of the last book in the series. Attention phone-users: To actually read the words in my pictures & view tiny details.
