For New York-born Gregory Perillo, the modern notion of The Peaceable Kingdom is a direct result of glasnost, perestroika and arms agreements.In March of 1991, Perillo`s canvas Peacable Kingdom -- Nations at Rest was presented to Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev at the Kremlin in Moscow as a symbol of peace and friendship.Perillo`s work features a beautiful child cradling a lamb in the company of the American bald eagle and a majestic Russian bear.The contemporary version in oils, measuring 52 inches by 65 inches, commemorates the crumbling of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. A hope for world peace is indicated, too, with the inclusion of a zebra (the African continent), a panda (China), a stork (the Far East), a koala bear (Australia), plus songbirds, a rabbit and even a Siamese cat.The corporate sponsors of Perillo`s work donated signed facsimiles of the painting to the 15 world leaders whose countries were at that time represented at the United Nations Security Council.Please see photos for more information about the artwork and frame.
