Description: Vintage Print: ""B17G bomber" Source: Milestones of Aviation: Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum, published in 1989 Image description Title: "The Boeing B17G bomber routinely flew at 65,500 pounds gross weight, and B17Fs even went up to 72,000 pounds. The development of the B-17 was largely a story of weight growth. The Model 299 prototype of 1935 weighed 38,000 pounds, the Y1B-17 of 1938 weighed 42,600 pounds, the B17B of 1939 weighed 47,900 pounds, and the B-17E of 1941 weighed 53,000 pounds. From the Model 299 of 1935 to the B-17G of 1945, gross weight increased by 27,000 pounds, mostly as a result of increased defensive armament, new and larger tail assemblies and more armor and fuel tanks, and new electronic radar navigation and bombardment systems. The wing area of 1420 square feet remained unchanged, so that wing loading increased from 27 to 46 pounds per square foot. All this was made possible by a 60 percent increase in available engine horsepower achieved over eight years - from four 750-horsepower Pratt and Whitnet R-1690-E Hornet engines in the Model 299 to four 1200 horsepower Wright R-1820-97 engines in the B-17F and G models."
