1972 SMU Mustangs Football Paper Placemat w/ Artist Rendition of His Predictions

Description: Offered is a paper placemat for the 1972 football season for the Southern Methodist University Mustangs. The cartoonist for this work was Bill McClanahan, who at that time was working for the Dallas Morning News. This "artwork" of Mr. McClanahan was his pre-season rendition of what might very well take place in the upcoming 1972 season. The placemat is 11 inches by 17 inches in size, so one can tell it is a "full size" placemat, and has never been used. Obviously he thought the Mustangs were going to be very competitive in the Southwest Conference with not one but several quality running backs, but must find a quarterback to make a loud noise in the Conference standings. Hayden Fry was SMU's head coach in 1972. Apparently Bill McClanahan was more than just a great cartoonist, because he was accurate in his pre-season predictions. SMU was much better in 1972, by abandoning their "flying Wishbone" offense and replacing it with a pro-set offense, and finished tied with Texas Tech for 2nd place in the Southwest Conference, only behind the University of Texas. SMU turned around a 4-7 season in 1971 to a 7-4 season in 1972. I have previously sold all the SMU placemats I had with the exception of four (4) placemats which I held back for my personal collection. This listing is for one (1) placemat. But since I am approaching the ripe old age of 80, I will sell all four placemats for $24.95 (equates to one free placemat) if a buyer desires a place setting of four of these SMU Mustang placemats.
