Description: This stunningly clean 1966 Yamaha YM1 was described by Cycle World Magazine as a “one-third liter roadburner”. Before Yamaha got into the big-bike game a year later, this 305cc two-stroke bike competed with bigger bikes for performance and even racing, with a top speed of 100mph. External oil tank with inspection window automatically supplies two-stroke oil to the engine. Yamaha claimed 29 horsepower, with a bore and stroke of 60x54mm, 7:1 compression pistons, 5-speed gearbox, and wide power band from 5,000 through 8,000 rpm. Blue Cat Motorcycle in St. Paul, MN is offering this beautiful example on consignment for the estate of the owner. To the best of our knowledge, this bike was stored since last registered in 1983. The owner was known to buy new bikes every year or so, ride a season or two, then stash them away, well-stored as the like-new condition attests. Our mechanics started the bike and found it in need of all the standard services a 42-year storage requires: a thorough fuel system cleaning of tank and carbs, new battery, and full tune-up. With only 4794 miles, this is one of the cleanest examples we’ve seen. We think it is likely an excellent early 80s restoration, but we cannot confirm this due to the passing of its owner. Period 60s windscreen is easily removable. This bike would make an excellent concourse project with minimal effort, or a flashy daily runner with its refined style. The polished, cast aluminum brake and clutch levers are delicate works of art, as are the foot control levers, all-in-one tach and speedo, headlight bucket, tail light assembly, and “Autolube Oil” cover featuring Yamaha’s triple tuning fork logo. The fasteners show little signs of wear if any, and the chrome is immaculate throughout. The seat’s plastic delivery cover was never removed, yellowing with time, but might reveal a pristine white seat beneath. We’ll leave that to the buyer. As the crowning glory, three original proprietary “Yamaha” plastic keys are included—they fit into headlight bucket. All in all, a very classy machine. Clean Minnesota title. Bike is sold as is, without warranty.
