This vintage photograph is offered for sale as a collectible item and conveys no transfer of copyright. 1966 Press Photo Illustration of Tiros Satellite Parts, NASA - nei50372 Washington - The first two satellites in the Tiros Operational System established in a January 30, 1964 agreement between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Department of Commerce are being prepared for launch. DOC's Environmental Science Service Administration (ESSA) will fund both satellites and launch vehicles. ESSA will use the satellites to obtain global meteorological data on the entire sunlit portion of the Earth daily and will relay the date to the meteorological community for analysis and use. Both spacecraft have the cartwheel Tiros configuration and will operate in the "wheel" mode. OT-3 will carry two conventional half-inch vidicon cameras into a circular 460-mile-high orbit with a period of about 100 minutes. OT-2 will carry two Automatic Picture Transmission (APT) cameras into a circular 860-mile high orbit with a period of about 113 minutes.
