Description: Up for sale today is the extraordinarily rare key to the 1934 $10 Silver Certificates. This is the 1934-A Late Finished Plate 87. When they began engraving this plate, it was during the run of 1934 (plain) notes with micro plate numbers. However, for some reason the plate was lost or set aside for a period of time in which they began production of 1934-A notes with macro plate numbers. The first macro plate number was 129. However, when this plate was later found, it was completed as a 1934-A face with macro number, however they kept its original plate number 87. Its companion plate 86 had a long service life, however, this plate must have broken early in production as known notes are in a tight serial range and very few have ever been found. PMG only has 10 known notes in its population report. This note grades Choice Fine to Very Fine in my opinion. Still intact with mild circulation and soiling. Still has good color on the design and overprint. Please check scans and judge grade for yourself. This note has maintained a value of $1,000 in VF in the Standard Guide to Small Size US Paper Money through several editions as more examples just aren't surfacing and with only 10 known they do not come up for sale often. Don't let this sit in your watch list too long, it will be gone. Thanks for looking and have a great day!
