You can plant hardwood cutting in a glass to encourage root growth, then pot or re-plant in spring. Soil: We use well-draining soil blend mix, I use Peat moss, 1/3 Sand or You may use soil method that works for you. These are very vigorant and root easily in water! Optional Instructions 1 Cut 6- to 10-inch-long stems from a mature, healthy branches using a sharp knife or pruning shears. Take multiple cuttings in case some stems do not form roots. Cuttings should be taken in wintertime, when the plant shows no signs of active growth. If you cannot put the cuttings in the rooting medium immediately, place them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator to keep from drying out. 2 Fill a clean flower pot with a sterile, lightweight rooting medium, such as an equal mixture of peat moss and sand or perlite. Do not add fertilizer to the rooting medium. 3 Remove leaves from the bottom part of the stem. Dip the end of the stem in root promoting hormone, available from most garden centers. Insert the stem about halfway into the rooting medium. If you are placing multiple stems in the same flower pot, space the cuttings several inches apart. Water the rooting medium well, and cover the entire pot with a clear plastic bag to increase humidity. Cut a few slits in the bag to prevent the formation of mold. 4 Place the flower pot in indirect light and check the soil for moisture every couple of days. Do not let the rooting medium dry out; high humidity is important during the root development stage. 5 Test the cuttings for root formation by gently tugging on the stem. You will feel resistance when roots begin to form these Shrubs typically begins to form roots in about two or three weeks. 6 Remove a cutting gently from the rooting medium to check the roots. Cuttings are ready to transplant to a larger pot when roots are about 1 inch long. If roots are not long enough, replant the cutting and check again in another week. 7 Transplant the cuttings to individual containers filled with moist, organic potting soil. Place the cuttings in a partially shady area of the garden or other protected location out of direct sunlight. 8 Wait at least one to two growing seasons before planting outdoors permanently.
